How to begin a novel in 100 easy lessons

I mentioned the first line of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall yesterday. Here you will find a list of the 100 Best First Lines of Novels, as decided upon by American Book Review. Some of them I disagree with as being frankly boring, some I totally agree with and am pleasantly surprised that they thought of them, and some of them I think are only on there because the book they came from is famous and not because they're actually very good lines. Some of them are just funny because they're so ridiculously long. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, sadly, is not present.
